Hyperloop: A Revolution in Transport?

Are we witnessing the biggest revolution in transportation since the Wright brothers took flight, more than a century ago? As Fast Company writes, the development of Elon Musk’s brainchild, the Hyperloop, is getting serious. Yesterday, Hyperloop One announced that they had secured $80 million in funding and that they would be running full-system, full-scale tests by late 2016. Meanwhile, their competitor, Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, announced a new agreement for what they tout as a safer, cheaper system. Before booking your seat however, this technology will need to overcome some serious challenges. With proposals for a Los Angeles to San Francisco route coming in at $6 billion-plus, cost remains an issue, while concerns about earthquakes and other natural disasters have yet to be assuaged. It’s clear that challenges must be overcome, but this technology could transform the way we move between cities. Breakfast in Seattle and at the office in San Francisco an hour later? It may be closer to reality than we think.
