Chase Farm Hospital

Considered to be one of the most digitally-advanced hospitals in the UK, the IBI-designed Chase Farm Hospital is equipped to deliver world-class service. The redevelopment of the hospital brought a new, five-storey acute hospital following the merger of the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust with Barnet and Chase Farm Hospital NHS Trust in 2014.

Embracing the recommendations of ‘The Naylor Review’ – a landmark report recommending how the Government can fund NHS reforms by selling unused land and buildings – the IBI design team reviewed the whole estate to enable the Trust to release funds through the sale of surplus land for residential and educational use. This response supported the local community’s infrastructure, but meant working within the parameters of a smaller footprint. Replying to the challenges of the site, the design team undertook an intense, collaborative redesign process, working alongside key stakeholders to produce an architectural solution that not only met spatial and financial constraints, but responded to the Trust’s vision for ‘a hotel rather than a hospital.’

The careful planning of the facility helped to drive clinical and cost efficiency, while maintaining a high-quality design focused on enhancing the patient experience. In addition, 40,000 sq. m. of flexible space was incorporated into the overall design to enable the hospital to expand in the future.

The hospital comprises an urgent care centre, inpatient elective surgery and rehabilitation beds, a surgical centre that incorporates a four table ‘Barn Operating Theatre’ (one of three in the country), imaging, diagnostics, endoscopy, chemotherapy and supporting facilities.
