The Next Generation of Family-Friendly Urban Living

Until now, coliving has targeted the single entrepreneur or global nomad whose desire to connect to the community is as important as connecting to the Wi-Fi. For young transient workers, having access to new friends is a huge draw, but for parents with children, having access to a community is absolutely essential. It takes a village after all!
Kin, a new family focused coliving start-up wants to provide families with a built-in support network of other parents who can share the joys and burdens of raising children. Their family programming and events encourage residents to get to know their neighbors, fostering a safe and caring urban environment for kids to grow up in. Kin also provides parents with access to a Kin-specific app that allows residents to set up playdates with other users or look for last minute babysitters.
The project is a collaboration between America’s largest coliving company, Common, and real estate company, Tishman Speyer. Together they will focus on both ground-up coliving developments as well as retrofitting older multi-family buildings. The first property will launch inside an existing Tishman Speyer building in Queens while a new purpose-built Kin project is simultaneously in the works.
The apartments at Kin are designed specifically for families, all the way from baby-proof cabinets to out of sight charging stations. The building is also be full of kid-friendly amenities and services like playrooms, last-minute childcare, stroller parking, and lots of family events. Parents will also have places of their own to play including both indoor and outdoor pools and a Pilates studio.
As the cost of city living continues to rise, families tend to be some of the first who are forced to leave in search of more space. If Kin is successful, this could offer a viable solution for urban families across the globe, providing parents with the services and support they need to not only live, but thrive.
