Optegra Eye Hospital

Working with Optegra since 2009, IBI Group was appointed to work on the feasibility and design of a new flagship ophthalmic hospital that would provide patients with both consultation and surgical services in a single facility in London’s medically-prestigious Harley Street area.  

The state-of-the-art facility occupies six floors of two adjacent former residential properties at 25 & 27 Queen Anne Street. Behind stunning Victorian & Edwardian façades, this modern, patient-centric hospital forms an elegant and coherent space, exemplifying clinical excellence and calm, welcoming comfort. Patients visiting the eye hospital typically remain conscious throughout their clinical procedures, and consequently have a heightened awareness of their environment. One of IBI’s main priorities was to optimise the provision of natural light throughout the building – a significant challenge in a building type characterised by a multiplicity of functional spaces, many requiring enclosure for reasons of privacy or clinical functionality.

Onsite facilities include a dedicated refractive suite, spacious consultant rooms, two operating theatres with an associated stage-one recovery room, a recovery suite with private patient pods, and a dedicated floor for staff including a south-facing roof terrace. The hospital’s interior design makes extensive use of high-quality art and every aspect of the facility has been designed to flow perfectly, with patients’ needs at the heart of its design.
